Talut askerleriyle birlikte ayrılınca dedi ki "Allah bir ırmakla sizi ağır imtihandan geçirecektir. Kim ondan içerse benden değildir, eliyle bir avuç alan alabilir. Kim de yiyeceğine bile katmazsa bendendir." Sonra pek azı dışında hepsi ondan içtiler. O ve beraberindeki müminler ırmağı geçince şöyle dediler: "Bugün Calut'a ve askerlerine karşı koymayı göze alacak durumda değiliz" Allah'ın huzuruna çıkacakları inancında olanlar ise şöyle dediler: "Nice küçük birlikler, Allah'ın izniyle, büyük birlikleri alt etmiştir. Sabredenlerin yanında olan Allah'tır."

Talut ordunun kumandasını alınca şunları bildirdi: "ALLAH sizi bir ırmakla sınayacak. Kim ondan içerse benden değildir. Kim onu tatmayıp sadece eliyle bir yudum alırsa bendendir." Pek azı dışında hepsi ondan içti. O, beraberindeki iman edenlerle ırmağı geçince, "Bugün Calut ve ordusuna karşı koyacak gücümüz yok" dediler. ALLAH ile karşılaşacaklarını sananlar ise şöyle dediler: "Sayıca az nice bölük, ALLAH'ın izniyle kalabalık bölükleri yenmiştir. ALLAH sabredenlerle beraberdir."
